This area became a sanctuary in the late 1950s with the construction of the Okhla barrage. The sanctuary lies on the Yamuna River and lies directly on the route of winter migratory birds. OBP provides a large habitat to migratory birds with its abundant food sources and availability of nesting grounds for these birds.
- Over 300 species of the 450 species recorded in Delhi can be spotted at the OBP.
- The sanctuary is ideal for birding watching throughout the year, but winter months are spectacular thanks to the arrival of rare and endangered migratory species.
