Agra, to most travellers, is about the Taj Mahal. And to the more adventurous, or those with more time on their hands, it is also about the lesser monuments like Agra Fort and Itimad Ud Daula. But on this tour, I came to discover the rich multicultural history of Agra, starting with Dara Shikoh’s library from the mid 17th century. This red sandstone building used to be a centre for scholarship and studies during Shah Jahan’s time, under the patronage of Aurangzeb’s brother. We then went on to wander through the old markets of Agra and had a pitstop at Jami Masjid. I really enjoyed the fact that I was able to interact with locals and find some great photo ops. We stopped to admire old, exquisite buildings all along the way, with interesting inputs from Amit. Amit then took us to a small eatery for a brunch of the Agra special bhedei aloo and jalebi, before dropping us back to the hotel. In all, it was a great morning, with an experience of Agra that my husband and I will cherish. Although I knew in a vague manner that there was a thriving old part of the city, I would have never been able to discover it on my own. So I am thankful to Padhaaro for helping me discover this.

Arriving in Agra one might think of this city as very busy, dirty and disorganized. But after meeting up with Amit and letting him show us around the old part of Agra, we were fascinated by the city and its friendly people and beautiful buildings. Amit seems to know everyone in this city, and we tasted different kinds of food and saw places you would not see on your own. Also, Amit is a clever and funny conversation partner. Recommended if you plan a trip to Agra!

I went on a tour with Amit expecting to see a very interesting side of Agra and Amit showed me just that. Now this was no easy task because I have been going to Agra all my life as it is also my maternal hometown and had seen most of it, but Amit was able to show me sights I had never seen before and didn't expect Agra to have either. At first impression Agra is a very congested and dirty city and you want to leave as soon as you can see the Taj, but if you can manage to over look the overwhelming lack of cleanliness and congestion and escape the regular Taj and Agra Fort sightseeing then this tour is a must to see the real beating heart of Agra. The walking tour will take you in the by lanes of Old Agra visiting some temples, markets, residential colonies, some delicious Indian sweet shops and ends at a very interesting church with a Mugal history. The fact that Amit conducts the tour early morning also saves one from most of the chaos that is Old City Agra. All in all a great experience if you want to go beyond the ordinary but beautiful Taj and Agra Fort sightseeing experience and want to see something exceptional.
